My Teaching Philosophy

Hello everyone!!!!
I believe that most of us have our own teaching philosophy, so do I. Here, I would like to share mine...What do you think about Teaching Philosophy?

I have the utmost confidence that every people is able to strive for success either in academic performance or in life. Aware of it, I should try my best to promote growth in creativity, freedom to think and discover knowledge. I believe that each different individual is unique, has different idea, opinion, and the way of thinking. These will be essential towards more comprehensive lesson that will benefit everyone.

One of the roles of teacher is to coach and facilitate students throughout the learning process by providing information and giving useful guidance in order to achieve their target. I would like to be more involved in educational activities to expand my knowledge, and being up-to-date with the latest information to improve myself. Because, as for me, teachers should be at least two or more steps ahead of their students. I feel that it is wise to reflect on every lesson that has been conducted, so, the strength can be identified and the weakness can be rectified or improved.

Besides, I will encourage my students to help themselves to be a student that have a variety of skills and equip themselves withe the skills to meet the challenges in future such as communication skills, digital literacy skills, inventive thinking skills and others. An educator no longer serve as an information provider but help them to be encouraged to explore every opportunity and utilize the resources around their environment, at the same time encourage them to think critically and motivated them,so that they can relate whatever thing they learn in the class with the real world and show the greatest interest in seeking knowledge. What is important is to help students to have high self-esteem, good interpersonal skills and excellent knowledge they have to mastered to survive in the world of future and also believe in their abilities and capabilities.

Motivational Slot is Today !!!!

Date: 26th April, 2013

Early this morning I was attending a motivational slot  for post graduates students, organized by IPS, UPSI...The motivator, Tan Sri Dato' Dr. Nordin B. Kardi, was really a nice person...so awesome...I don't really know him but his name is so familiar...During this slots, he was motivating us to enjoy what we are doing now..Me, as a students, must feel so grateful that have been given a chance to further my study at my early age....He also inspired us to keep learning and learning...no matter what...Yes, of course, during this period of time, we've been having a hardship time but always think that there are always some rewards for us...utk apa sahaja yg telah dikorbankan selama ni....In his talk, he keep asking us to improve our communication skill, especially in mastering verbal English...In this blog, I might not use a correct Grammar or Vocabulary..but still......this is the process of learning... He wants us to be knowledgeable...widen our view of knowledge...not only focusing on what we are doing now...wants us to think outside the box...be more productive especially in works.... In his talks, he also mention about do not keep saying the word BUT  and BECAUSE... for example..."Now, I do have a good job but I want to further my study", "I can't attend that program because I've commitment here"... Otherwise, ALWAYS use the word AND... Just think why we should to avoid this words in our daily life...There's something meaningful here..And, really..I've learned a lot today although the slots is only 3 hours of time...Semangat baru telah disuntik seketika...memang betul kata orang...susah nak keep motivating us / others to be a good learner....Well, I have to keep motivating myself for the sake of the future...

School in the Cloud

The Future of Learning: School in the Cloud
Have you heard about school in the cloud???
What is school in the cloud??? ... is that study up into the sky??? In the cloud???...Hoho...absolutely not..When I was heard about it at first, I've been thinking a lot what is it actually....

As for me, the "School in the cloud" is a term which internet and computers are fully utilized by the students and teachers. Lots of knowledge that we can get if we use the internet wisely and precisely. Even, we can get a degree by taking an online courses.

The educational researcher, Dr Sugata Mitra, says that the way schools currently constructed are not needed anymore. He asks the community to help him to design the School in the Cloud, a learning lab where children/students can explore and learn from each other using online resources, collaboration, and mentoring from the cloud. Dr. Sugata Mitra's "Hole in the Wall" experiments have shown that children are able to teach themselves and each other without formal teaching, if they are motivated by curiosity and peer interest.

Dr. Sugata Mitra, the winner of  TED Prize 2013
There are no limitations on access to education where technology can offers simple solutions to complex problems which helps bringing modern educational opportunities to students wanting to learn at all level  of education.

Lets watch the video...!!!!

Reflection Week 7

Date: 06th April, 2013 (Saturday)

This week, "Peer Teaching" session starts with the presentation by Group 5 on Windows Movie Maker...

1. MovieMaker (Group 5)
Windows Movie Maker, which formerly known as Windows Live Movie Maker, is a freeware video editing software by Microsoft. It is a part of Windows Essentials software suite and offers the ability to create and edit videos as well as to publish them on SkyDrive, Facebook, YouTube, and Flickr. Here is some comparison between Windows Movie Maker and Windows Live Movie Maker in the following aspects: Layout, Video Input, Editing and Output.

A. Interface
Windows Movie Maker: The layout consists of a storyboard view and a timeline view, collections for organizing imported video, and a preview pane. When in Storyboard view, the video project appears as a film strip showing each scene in clips. The storyboard/timeline consists of one 'Video' accompanying Audio bar, one 'Music/Audio' bar and one 'Titles/Credits' bar.

Windows Live Movie Maker: In addition to a lighter color scheme, Windows Live Movie Maker works differently where you won't find the function such as a Storyboard, drop down menus, and a timeline. Windows Movie Maker used a Task based approached  to creating a movie....Windows Live Movie Maker introduce a clean design with most tools and functionality revealed through the innovative Scenic Ribbon which displays common functionality once buried under drop down menus and wizards in a gallery of easy to identify icons.

B. Video Input
Windows Movie Maker: When importing footage into the program, a user can either choose to Capture Video from camera, scanner or other device OR Import existing video files into the user's collections. The accepted formats for import are .WMV/.ASF, .MPG (MPEG-1), .AVI (DV-AVI), .WMA, .WAV, and .MP3.

Windows Live Movie Maker: We can add video files, photo files and audio files with much more video formats supported such as WMV, ASF,WM, M2TS, M2T, WTV, MP4, MOV,M4V, MPEG, MOG, MPE, M1V, MP2, MPV2,MOD, VOB and AVI.

BUT, if the videos are not supported by both, we will need to convert the videos first before importing it...

C. Video Editing
Windows Movie Maker: After capture, any clip can be dragged and dropped anywhere on the timeline. Once on the timeline, clips can be duplicated or split and any of the split sections deleted/copied using the standard Windows keyboard shortcuts or clicked and dragged to another position. Right-clicking any clips brings up the range of editing options. An AutoMovie feature offers predefined editing styles (titles, effects and transitions) for quickly creating movies.

Windows Live Movie Maker: It does totally opposites with the previously Windows Movie Maker. Task like re-arranging or copying a video clip are more visual and interactive. It displays a multiple frames in a clip, which we can use the video cursor bar to scan through a video clip and see additional sequences within the video itself. The cursor bar itself is an important element of the software and allows us to accomplish many common task in Movie Maker timeline.

D. Finished Video (Output)
Windows Movie Maker: It can only export video in Windows media formats. Earlier versions of Window Movie Maker did not support direct burning of DVDs. The project had to be saved first as an AVI file, and a separate authoring program used to produce and burn the DVD. Movie Maker also allows users to publish a finished video on video hosting websites.

Windows Live Movie Maker: It makes videos easier to share online with a few clicks. We can post video to YouTube  right from the main menu, or add a quick plug-in and easily publish to Facebook. We also can burn our creation to a DVD or save it in high definition to play on TV. Save it down to a smaller format and transfer it to mobile device or send it via e-mail.

Interesting right????...You should tried it first and choose which one is more easier and convenient to use...

The learning sessions continued by another group presenting on Microsoft One Note....

2. Microsoft OneNote (Group 7)

Microsoft OneNote or formerly called Microsoft Office OneNote, is a computer program for free-form information gathering and multi-user collaboration. It gathers users notes (Handwritten or typed), drawings, screen clippings, and audio commentaries, and shares them with other OneNote users over the internet. In OneNote, users can enter typed text via keyboard, create tables and insert pictures anywhere. OneNote also saves data automatically as the users works. It also saves information in pages organized into sections within notebooks. The interface is an electronic version of a tabbed ring binder, in which the user can directly makes notes and gather material from other applications. In OneNote, users can insert, create tables, add pictures and create mind maps. User also can write in any corner of the document by simply clicking on the desired place. OneNote is commonly used on laptops or desktop PCs. For users who use the tablet PC, they can make notes in OneNote using handwriting or pen. More interestingly, OneNote can also make calculations by just typing numbers and mathematical operations. Among other privileges OneNote, users can insert pictures from the web without crop or copy but by just using the screen clipping and also can extract any writings from the picture. Additionally, OneNote also allows users to create a password for the confidential files. Very interesting, is it?? For students and teachers, OneNote is very useful for making notes.

Attached herewith is OneNote Tutorial from YouTube..

Lastly, our lecturer give a brief lecture on the use of  CamStudio...

3. CamStudio (By Cik Asmayati)

CamStudio is a screen casting program for Microsoft Windows released as free software, which renders video in an AVI format that can record audio and activities performed on the computer screen. Its also known as Desktop Screen Recorder. This software is useful for teachers to produce a video demonstration of the R&D process.

Some tutorial of CamStudio are here: CamStudio Info , CamStudio User Guide , CamStudio Tutorial , and demo from Youtube.

Wow...what a great knowledge I've learn today...I might not know about these software or program if I didn't take this course....
Thanks to all presenters for the info that you've given...

Reflection Week 5

Date: 23rd March, 2013 (Saturday)

1. Picasa (Group 3)

Week 5...now, it's turn for Group 2 to do their presentations. Group 2 will be presenting about Picasa, a quite new software for me....

Picasa is an image organizer and image viewer for organizing and editing digital photos, plus an integrated photo-sharing website...We can download it to view, edit and organize our photo collection. For organizing photo, Picasa has file importing and tracking features, as well as tags, facial recognition and collections for further sorting. It also offers several basic photo editing functions, such as color enhancement, red eye reduction, cropping, slide shows, collage, image timelines. Besides, we also can produces a video using Picasa but with limited functions compared to Movie Maker.

For me, this software is quite interesting...we just need to spend some times to explore it..
Have Fun...

Reflection Week 4

Date: 16th March, 2013 (Saturday)

Week 4....
Group 1 continued their presentation about blog....."Guys..we've got problem with Drop down Menu"...
Group 1 members teach us again about Drop Down Menu...
Finally, we managed to do well....Alhamdulillah..

Drop Down Menu
The next lesson is how to be a  followers of other bloggers. We must be a follower of our lecturer, Cik Asmayati's blog..and also blogs of our classmates. So, we can exchange idea, shares information with others...

After we've learned the basic of creating a blog, it is our duty to decorate our blog with our own creativity...to make it more attractive and meaningful...Besides, we need to upload all of our assignments throughout this semester on our blog and write reflections of those lectures...I hope that the information that I've shared in this blog will be meaningful to everyone..

Thank you so much to Group 1 members for their effort to teach us...

Reflection Week 3

Date: 09th March, 2013 (Saturday)

1. Blog (Group 1)

The presentation slots, that is "Peer Teaching" has began this week. Group 1 starts the presentation with the title on "How to Create A Blog". Most of us might know about blog. I do know about blog and have a lot of beautiful and creative blog....but never thought that I will create a blog for myself....because I don't even know how to create it..Thanks to all  facilitators a.k.a presenters for the information..They helps us a lot..taught us step by step on how to create a blog...The most important thing to create this blog, we must have a Google account...
We felt so excited bcoz most of us do not know how to create it...so do I...The most frustration part is the internet access at that room is quite slow...Well, it's ok..we still focus on doing it....The presentation focus more on templates, layout, post, and more...they also taught us a little bit about "Drop Down Menu"...we have a little difficulties on doing this part coz it involves "coding"...Biasalah kan..baru belajar..takkan dah pandai terus...right???....Pendek kata, we need to focus  tok buat blog ni..huhu...Fokus..memang penting dalam semua perkara yang kita lakukan...

The clock ticking so fast...3 hours of lecturer was not enough to learn to make an interesting blog..This presentation will be continued next week....

Reflection Week 2

Date: 02nd March, 2013 (Saturday)

This week, our lecturer introduced us a wonderful and interesting learning medium through video, that is Khan Academy. It's really help us to improve our understanding of such concepts especially chemistry. All videos on this site is free and it can be used by teachers and students in the teaching and learning process.

The Khan Academy is a non-profit educational website created in 2006 by American educator, Salman Khan, a graduate of MIT and Harvard Business School. The stated mission is "providing a high quality education for anyone, anywhere". The website supplies a free online collection of more than 4,000 micro lectures via video tutorials stored on YouTube teaching mathemathics, physics, chemistry, biology, and more.
As long as I remembered, when I was in secondary school, this kind of learning medium couldn't be felt. There's a lot of changes and features that can be used in T&L process in school nowadays. Students, in fact, should use this opportunity to make them excel and succeed in academics performance.

Salman Khan at TED 2011.

The Mole and Avogadro's Number

Besides knowing about Khan Academy, we're also given a task to choose any software for each group and present it during classes of the following weeks. The software that have been chosen for our Peer Teaching are Blog (Group 1), Picasa (Group 2), Microsoft Publisher (Group 4), ChemSketch (Group 3), OneNote (Group 7), MovieMaker (Group 5), Prezi (Group 8), Microsoft PowerPoint (Group 6), Microsoft Excel (Group 9).

Of course, this might be an interesting and exciting moment for me coz I will learn something new, something that I've never know it whereabouts. This ICT class has given me a platform to learn something new and valuable....that I might used in future...=)

Reflection Week 1

Date: 23rd February, 2013 (Saturday)

New semester has begun. As usual, in the first week, the class session starts with getting know about classmate, and the most important is the introduction of course / subject that we've gonna learn this semester, Technology and Innovation in Teaching and Learning Chemistry, or simply called, SKP 6024. This course actually discuss the current issues and trends of technology in secondary chemistry education. Students will be exposed to a variety of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) application, which include the role of simulations and modelling, internet and web-based applications. And the most interesting is, this course will be led by our most experienced and enjoyable lecturer, Ms Asmayati Yahaya. During this introductory session, students were told about activities that need to be done to complete the course throughout this semester. I was so excited with this course because it will provide me the new knowledge, especially about education.

1. Online Forum at MyGuru 2

Students are needed to give comments or idea for each issues given in the forum. Students must log in to MyGuru 2 portal to respond. The date of forum will be open or forum expired has already being set. Students should actively participate in this activity as more information and knowledge that we can share and get through it. Each student has different experiences in their careers, so they can share their experience with the related issues discussed.

2. Google Drive
One of the new things I've learned today is about Google Drive, an application that I've already noticed but never used it. During this lecture, I found that this application is very convenient, safe and we do not have to worry that we will lose the important documents if our computer or laptop is damaged. Quite interesting, right??

Well, FYI, Google Drive is a file storage and synchronization service provided by Google, which enables user cloud storage, file sharing and collaborative editing. Google Drive is now the home of Google Docs, a suite of productivity application, that offer collaborative editing on documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and more. Google Drive gives all users 5 GB of cloud storage for free to start with.

Besides, we are told to work in group of 3 or 4 for completing our assignments throughout this semester..Cik Asmayati also requested us to build / create an Online Survey Form regarding ICT awareness among students.

Reflection Week 8

Date: 13th April, 2013 (Saturday)

This week, there is a presentation of two groups which is Group 6 (my group) and Group 8. These presentation is about two software named Prezi and Microsoft PowerPoint.

1. Prezi Software (Group 8)
Prezi is a relatively-new presentation program that incorporates the use of text, graphics, and embedded videos, all on a web-based platform. It serves a similar function to PowerPoint, but with more powerful and interesting features. presentations are created on a canvas rather than on slides. Items on the canvas can be dragged, tilted, and zoomed to create an engaging look.

Templates in Prezi presentation
Prezi is such a wonderful presentation tool which can be learn by few easy steps. Few extra minutes are needed by the users to explore and demonstrate their creativity of using it. I'm 100% sure that most of  us will like to use Prezi for our presentation...It's absolutely will attract the audience to concentrate, feel more interested and do not feel bored to see / watch our presentation....

Prezi could be found in 3 different packages and this is not a totally free software, which can only be produced online.

  • Full Version Package - Users need to subscribe and pay to get the full version of Prezi.
  • Public Package - Free subscription for the period of 30 days and storage size of 100MB.
  • Students & teachers Package - Trial version is the best recommended, which the software will be free of charge for the next 30 days from the date of subscription and the storage size are much larger (500MB)

Here, I've provided some links of Prezi's Tutorial which can be easily downloaded from the internet: Prezi: A Quickstart Guide , How to Use Prezi , How to Create Prezi in 5 Easy Steps , Introduction to Prezi , The Prezi Tutorial , Prezi Tutorial , Prezi Basics and Manual Prezi .

PREZI IS VERY EASY TO USE..!!!
And, most importantly, PREZI IS FUN!!

Want to know more about Prezi, kindly click this link: http://prezi.com/ .

Next, our attention shifted to another group presentation, that is Microsoft PowerPoint by Group 6.

2. Microsoft PowerPoint (Mouse Mischief) (Group 6)

Microsoft PowerPoint has being recognized by all and being a favorite tools for students and teachers in their presentations or  projects.

Microsoft Mouse Mischief is an add-in to Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2010 and 2007, the presentation program by Microsoft that is part of the Microsoft Office system. This program enables teachers to create and insert questions, polls, and drawing activity slides into their lesson. Mouse Mischief is a fun way to keep your students' attention and increase participation in the classroom. Mouse Mischief gives us 3 major benefits as an educational tool for classroom use that are:
  • First, student can actively participate in lessons, where it can help students learn collaboration.
  • Second, it helps teachers connect with large classes, to get every student involved in the lessons, and provide teachers with immediate feedback on the understanding and progress of the class as a whole.
  • Third, it can help provide access to technology, which enables large group of students to gain computer practice during their lesson.
Attached herewith an overview of Microsoft Mouse Mischief and demo from YouTube.

During the presentation, we are taught how to build a crossword puzzle...Hmm...So interesting...but, this Mouse Mischief program are needed to be installed first...

Reflection Week 10

Date: 27th April, 2013

It's week 10 already...This week, we have to submit our next task that is Assignment 6. This assignment is about Learning Resource. We, in a group of 3 or 4, are needed to select four of chemistry concept and use any of suitable software to record how to explain those concepts, which can be easily access by the students.

Also, there is one last group presentation, Group 9, entitled Microsoft Excel.

1. Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet application developed by Microsoft for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. It features calculation, graphing tools, pivot tables, and a macro programming language called Visual Basic for Applications. It contains a workbook and worksheet that consists of row, column and cell. In each cell can include data and can be used for the calculation. In making calculations about the user needs to write the formula such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, etc. The formula also works to modify the calculation and tracking error. Microsoft Excel is very useful for key-in any data and create charts or graphs. During the class, our friend have introduced us on how to organize students score easily and systematically.

However Microsoft Excel users should have some knowledge in the use of formulas. But, it is not too difficult to learn it...

Reflection Week 6

Date: 30th March, 2013 (Saturday)

"Peer Teaching" sessions become more interesting, joyful and meaningful...This week the presentation was continued by Group 4, presenting on Microsoft Publisher and Group 3, presenting on ChemSketch...I've used Ms Publisher before and it is very easy....As for ChemSketch, I've seen my friends using it before but don't ever try to download and use it..Here is some info's about Ms Publisher and ChemSketch.

1. Microsoft Publisher (Group 4 )

Microsoft Publisher is an entry-level desktop publishing application from Microsoft, differing from Ms Word in that the emphasis is placed on page layout and design rather than text composition and proofing. Ms Publisher normally being used to produce or creating cards, banners, calendars, and more. This application is very simple and do not take a long time to learn it. It is very useful to us, as for students, teachers, and others. There are a lots of design can be choose and created... COOL!!!

I've tried this application to make a flyers....Here's the flyers...
